About Imposter Academy

Most players get the same secret word. Imposters get a different word. Everyone types a one-word clue about their word without saying the word itself. Compare the clues out loud, then vote for who you think is an imposter. Imposters try to avoid getting caught.

For example, most players might get ‘cat’ while an imposter gets ‘dog’. Clues like ‘whiskers’, ‘purring’, and ‘barking’ help the group work out who has a different word. Keep your word secret until the results.

After voting, you find out who the imposters were. Imposters get one last guess at the word most players had for 2 stars. Then everyone sees both words and what they mean. Everyone stays in the game, and roles change each round.

One person hosts, and 4–40 players join on their own devices at studyquest.app/join with a room code and nickname. Choose word pairs from your notes or use the ready-made words. Each pair is one round. The host starts each step when everyone is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a timer on the clues or the vote?

No. The host starts each step when everyone is ready, so there is time to read, give clues, and discuss.

What happens if an imposter gets caught?

They stay in the game. They miss out on the 3 stars for avoiding detection, but can still earn 2 stars by guessing the word most players had. Everyone gets a new role next round.

Where do the words come from?

The game creates word pairs from your uploaded notes. The host can edit the pairs or turn off any they do not want. You can also use the ready-made words without uploading anything. You still need at least 4 players.

How many students can play, and do they need accounts?

Between 4 and 40 players. Students join at studyquest.app/join with the room code and a nickname — no accounts needed, and no app download.

How do players earn stars?

Players with the shared word earn 2 stars for voting for an imposter. Imposters earn 3 stars if they are not caught, and another 2 stars if they correctly guess the word most players had.
