Imposter Academy: Whole-Class Social Deduction

Every student gets the same secret codeword from your class material — except a few double agents, who get a look-alike decoy word instead. Each round, everyone types one clue about their word without giving it away. The class debates out loud, votes on who they think is bluffing, and unmasks the double agents. Every mission ends with a debrief card that teaches both words side by side.

About Imposter Academy

Imposter Academy turns your class material into a game of clues and bluffs. Every student gets the same secret codeword pulled from your uploaded material — except a handful of double agents, who get a close decoy word instead. Each round, everyone types one clue about their word without ever saying it, and the whole board flips over together so the class can compare notes.

Then the debate starts out loud, right there in the room — there's no in-app chat, because the class is already sitting together. Students vote for whoever they think is bluffing, and the most-suspected players get unmasked one card at a time. Nobody is ever knocked out of the game: getting caught only costs that mission's stars, and roles are dealt fresh again next mission, so a caught double agent is straight back in the action.

Every mission ends with a debrief card that lines up the real codeword and the decoy side by side, with a one-line explanation of why they're easy to mix up — the teach-back moment that turns the bluffing into review. Double agents even get one last typed guess at the real codeword for a chance to steal back stars before the reveal.

Hosting takes seconds: open Imposter Academy, curate the word pairs pulled from your material (or start from the built-in demo pack with zero uploads), and show the room code on the projector. Students join at studyquest.app/join with the code and a nickname — no accounts needed. Nothing on the board is ever timed; the teacher advances every phase — clues, debate, vote, unmask, debrief — with a single button, so the whole night moves at the class's pace, not a clock's.

Who Imposter Academy Is For

Teachers who want a whole-class game built on listening to each other's answers, not just racing a quiz deck — and who want a natural talking point for review discussion built right into the debrief.

Best Subjects to Study With Imposter Academy

Vocabulary pairs that are easy to mix up

Concepts with a close cousin — weather vs. climate, metaphor vs. simile — make the sharpest decoys, since the whole game is built on the mix-up.

Science and biology terms

Paired terms like mitosis and meiosis give double agents a decoy word close enough to bluff with but different enough to catch.

History and civics concepts

Related-but-different ideas, like democracy and republic, turn naturally into a codeword-and-decoy pair for a mission.

Any subject with a curated term list

The teacher curates every pair before the night starts, so any material works as long as a few close-but-different term pairs come out of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a timer on the clues or the vote?

No. Nothing on the board ever counts down. The teacher advances every phase — clue rounds, debate, vote, unmask, debrief — with a single button, whenever the class is ready.

What happens if a student gets caught as a double agent?

They're not eliminated — nobody ever is. Getting unmasked just means that mission scores zero stars for them, and every role is dealt fresh again at the next mission, so they're straight back in the game.

Where do the codeword and decoy come from?

Advanced AI pulls word pairs from your uploaded class material, and the teacher curates the list before the night starts — toggling off any pair that doesn't fit. No material yet? The built-in demo pack lets you run a full night with zero uploads.

How many students can play, and do they need accounts?

Between 4 and 40 players. Students join at studyquest.app/join with the room code and a nickname — no accounts needed, and no app download.

Can a caught double agent still score points?

Yes. Every double agent — caught or not — gets one last typed guess at the real codeword during the steal phase, and a correct guess earns stars even after being unmasked.
